A Mid-Wilshire grocery store was raided by the Los Angeles Police Department as part of an investigation into the illegal use of plastic bags for carrying groceries.

The investigation, dubbed Operation Crime Asphyxiation, was 6 months in the making. “We had officers go in undercover to buy groceries and it seemed they were consistently coming back with plastic bags.” Said lead investigator Grady Clark. “After a chemical analysis provided by LAPD’s Narcotics Analysis Units, we confirmed they were in fact plastic bags.”

On the scene, police found nearly 8 pounds of plastic bags with a street value of around $32.

With proper evidence and witnesses, the LAPD put out a felony arrest warrant for 14 grocery store clerks. 11 were arrested, while three are at large.

“Choices have consequences,” said officer Clark, “And the consequences of these bags are gonna be a $100 fine, and a written notice that they have to stop, or next time it’ll be a $200 fine.”

If you have any information on the whereabouts of the three grocery store clerks are still at large, call the anonymous LAPD tip line, 1-877-LAPD 24-7.
