‘Tis the season for protesting, as local Honda Civic owners have taken to the streets outside the Norm Reeves Honda Superstore due the dealership’s decision to nix their traditional “Merry Civicmas” sales event for a more inclusive “Happy Honda Days” campaign.
“Civics are not only the most popular Honda model, but the Honda corporation was founded on Civic values like reliability and economy,” said protestor Gail McHugh. “Norm Reeves Honda’s deliberate choice to not acknowledge that in their campaign is a clear threat to Civic culture. It’s like they forgot that the spirit of Civicmas was about spreading goodwill and affordable prices to all customers. I mean, like, as long as those customers own the same model car I do.”
Despite all the uproar, dealership owner Norm Reeves insists his intentions are pure. “Saying ‘Happy Honda Days’ allows us to still market to Civic owners, while simultaneously including Accord and CR-V owners as well,” said Reeves. “It can even appeal to those folks who aren’t sure if they want to own a Honda or who are just shopping for a gift and don’t personally believe in driving at all.”
Tim Beagle, president of the Southern California Automobile Club and a devout Civic owner, thinks the change is a slippery slope. “We need to take Civicmas back from these grumpy ‘Repo Men’,” said Beagle. “If we allow this, what’s next? Calling our pine tree air fresheners ‘Honda Days’ tree air fresheners? Or Civic forbid they ban festivity scenes celebrating the first Civic’s completed assembly in 1 BC [Before Civic].”
While the protest rages on, passerby Jeanette Shepherd doesn’t understand what all the hoopla is about. “Who fucking cares?” says Shepherd. “People should just smile and accept the sale, because either way, Honda is just trying to be generous.”
“Though maybe I’m not the best person to ask,” added Shepherd. “I lost my faith in the Civic after one hit and killed my son.”
